Introduction
2D drawings in AutoCAD are the most representative feature of this software. When making 2D drawings in AutoCAD, it is important to take into account the 3D figure that we are planning to capture in our design. So that the transition to the XY plane is more fluid and efficient when executing it.
How to Start
The FLATSHOT command is of great importance when designing, since it can generate 2D geometric shapes based on a figure that is in 3D. This function uses different views that are in the XY plane in the model space. Using this tool, you can consequently get views of the geometry at the top, as well as the front and isometric side in less than a minute.
You need to keep in mind the 3D design you are planning to work on.
Once this is done, open the model in AutoCAD. Subsequently, change to the workspace of your 3D modeling, as well as change the visual style to Shading. Change the view to Superior from the view cube. This can also be done from the views drop-down menu.
Understanding the FLATSHOT Tool
To understand how this command works, select the FLATSHOT tool found in the Expanded Section panel of the Home tab. Alternatively, you can type FLATSHOT on the command line. This will be activated by pressing Enter. This will open the FLATSHOT dialog box. This is how it will show on your screen. Check out the options that are available in the dialog box.
Destination:
The first option here is "Insert as new block", which will ensure that new views created in 2D with FLATSHOT are inserted as a block in the drawing you are working with at this time.
The radio button "Replace existing block" will allow you to replace any block you have selected with a 2D created with the FLATSHOT tool.
The last option you will see will export the 2D drawing to a new file in DWG format.
Foreground line:
These are the lines that are visible and that are projected into the XY plane. They can also be seen throughout the current view that you have selected. The Color and line type drop-down menu in this panel will change the properties of visible lines in 2D geometry.
Darkened line:
These are the hidden lines that are present in 2D geometry. In case you want to show these hidden lines, just click on the Show button and this will give you the option to change the invisible color and type of line. Hidden lines can be seen in the drop-down menu.
Include tangential borders:
The last option is a radio button that you can find as "Include tangential borders". By clicking this button, you will see the lines at the edges. These are tangential to the adjacent edge.
Create Top View
Select the FLATSHOT tool found in the expanded section panel of the Home tab. Alternatively, you can type FLATSHOT on the command line and press Enter. Then, select "Insert as new block" in the Destination panel within the FLATSHOT dialog box.
It is very important that when you do this you do not change the properties of the foreground lines and that you select the Show option button that you will see in the Dark Lines panel. When you're done, change the color to a yellow or any other color that is easy to distinguish. This way it will be very easy to identify the dark lines. Select the radio button called "Include tangential borders" and click Create.
When you have done this, you will see that your cursor now follows the Top View of the geometry, even when the figure is in 3D. Click on a point in the drawing area where you want to place it and then press Enter 3 times to accept all the default values.
Create Front View
You can change the view to Front from the drop-down menu called "View cube" or "View". Once there, use the FLATSHOT command again. Select all the options in the FLATSHOT dialog box, exactly as you previously selected when we were working with the Top View. Once this is done, just click on Create.
By following the steps above, the 2D drawing of the front view will also follow the cursor. In this case, however, you will no longer see a clear geometry. Instead, it will appear as a line because the geometry is created in the XY plane that is not the plane you are currently working on.
Click on a point in the drawing area and press Enter 3 times to accept the default values. Switch to the Top view or the XY plane so you can see the front view more clearly.
Create Isometric View
In case you want to create a 2D isometric view, which is based on an original 3D design, you just have to change the view to Isometric SE or any other isometric view you want. You only need to repeat all the new account processes, as we have mentioned in the previous examples when we work with the Front View and the Top View. By doing this, an isometric view will also be created in the XY plane.
Conclusion
Having all this, you can then generate 2D designs. Even when your original model is in 3D, the FLATSHOT tool allows you to pass that drawing into a plane. This function is very useful when, for example, you need to create a plan of an existing building. Or even for simpler objects. It is convenient to combine these tools with other programs such as SolidWorks and 3D Max.
